In a significant development for Uttar Pradesh’s capital, the Union Cabinet has officially approved the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for Lucknow Metro Phase 1B (Line-2). The project, estimated at a cost of ₹5,801 crore, marks another major step in strengthening the city’s public transport network and easing the burden on its congested roadways.

Lucknow Metro Project Overview
Lucknow Metro Phase 1B is designed to expand the reach of the existing metro system by introducing a new 11.165 km corridor connecting Charbagh Railway Station to Vasant Kunj. The alignment will pass directly through Old Lucknow, an area known for its heritage charm, narrow roads, bustling markets, and high-density neighborhoods.
The corridor will consist of 12 stations, including 5 elevated stations and 7 underground stations. This combination ensures efficient integration of modern metro infrastructure while minimizing disruption to the historical and cultural landmarks of the city.
Lucknow Metro Key Alignment & Stations
The new line will serve as a lifeline for Old Lucknow, providing metro connectivity to some of the city’s busiest and most iconic locations:
- Aminabad – one of the oldest and most vibrant marketplaces
- Chowk – a hub for traditional food, handicrafts, and culture
- King George Medical University (KGMU) – a critical health and education institution
- Bara Imambara – a globally recognized heritage site

Benefits of Lucknow Metro Phase 1B
The approval of this corridor is expected to bring multiple long-term benefits for Lucknow and its residents:
- Seamless Connectivity
Old Lucknow, with its narrow lanes and high population density, has long struggled with traffic congestion. Phase 1B will ensure smooth connectivity to newer parts of the city and reduce dependence on private vehicles. - Traffic Decongestion
With more people opting for metro travel, busy road stretches such as Chowk, Aminabad, and Medical College areas will witness reduced vehicular pressure. - Environmental Gains
A shift towards public transit will significantly cut down carbon emissions and improve overall air quality in the city. - Boost to Tourism & Local Economy
With easier access to heritage monuments and markets, tourism is expected to flourish. Local businesses in Chowk and Aminabad will also benefit from improved footfall. - Inclusive Development
Affordable and reliable public transport will improve accessibility for all socio-economic groups, ensuring equitable urban growth.
🗓️ Project Timeline
With the DPR now approved, the next crucial step will be inviting bids for construction, which is expected to happen by Q2 2026. Once contracts are awarded, civil work and system installation will begin in phases.
The estimated period of completion will likely span 4–5 years post-construction start. Once operational, the Lucknow Metro’s total network length will expand to 34 km, strengthening its position as one of North India’s most modern urban transport systems.
Urban Transformation in the Making
Lucknow Metro Phase 1B isn’t just a transport project — it’s a catalyst for urban transformation. By enhancing accessibility to Old Lucknow’s historical areas, the metro will bridge the gap between heritage and modernity. It will also encourage sustainable mobility, reduce dependence on fossil fuels, and make the city more resilient to future urban challenges.
With this development, Lucknow is set to join the ranks of Indian cities actively investing in smart mobility solutions under the National Urban Transport Policy and aligned with India’s broader infrastructure vision.
As the city gears up for this next big leap in public transportation, residents, businesses, and tourists alike can look forward to a more connected, greener, and efficient urban future.
